Black Canon AE-1 (1976) SLR camera with a 50mm...

I never thought I would have a blog, but here I am.

I’m a Southern California-based photographer (part-time photographer) self-taught with no formal training…I bet your impressed so far. I had various film cameras and my father’s Canon AE-1, but the time and money developing film took the fun out of it , then came digital. I bought a Polaroid 2.3 megapixel camera and it was like magic! I thought it was cool back then.

This 2.3 MP camera cost $400.00 in January of 2001 (crazy!).  It’s almost 10 years old and still works, the Canon AE-1 (30 years old) still works too, but that doesn’t really surprise me. The PDC 2300Z was a horrible camera by today’s standards, this camera would fit in your pocket if you were wearing a clown suit with very large pockets  and the batteries died after about 50 shots.

My next step was the Nikon D50 and the Fuji F30, what a difference. I now have a Nikon D300 and a Canon S90 pocket camera, both very nice cameras.  It’s been said the camera doesn’t make the photo, you could probably give that Polaroid to a AP photographer and he would still make a compelling and dramatic photo everyday of the week. Digital cameras have come a long way, I wonder what the camera of tomorrow will be?

Sometimes I look for some other form of creative outlet, my interests  are painting, sketching, woodworking and of course photography. Although it’s been a long time since I painted anything besides the walls in a room…a jack of all trades, a master of none. I recently did a sketch of Ollie (Black Lab mix) and Honey (my Sister’s Chihuahua). You gotta love dogs, even the little rat one’s. I’ve read about activating the right side of your brain through sketching and painting and thus improving your photographic eye. Yeah, right.
